USS Salem

See it while you can, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it ends up being scrapped at some point. Costs a lot of money to maintain a ship that size, it seems like they don’t have it.

It was just relocated to a new pier so it should be around for a while

I’d trade an Essex or an Iowa to keep Salem afloat. We have plenty of either. I’d trade at least two of each for Texas or Olympia.

And even basically with zero maintenance, it can sometimes take a surprisingly long time for a ship to deteriorate to the point where it becomes unsafe. The Queen Mary and Olympia are both pretty good examples of ships that were tied up and basically left to rot for 50+ years and are somehow magically still around.

Yep, but the big ships have a much easier time raising funds, both because of their prominence, but also because (at least in the case of the battleships), they have the name of a state on them, giving a natural patron.
I was reading about USS Cabot (shown here in service with Spain as Dedalo) a while ago, and thinking how much of waste that we couldn’t preserve a unique ship (the last surviving CVL from WWII) instead of one of the many Essexes.

I’ve only been on Mighty Mo, they are fun to look around.
